Rippon Vineyard at Lake Wanaka is often described as the most picturesque vineyard. Perhaps. Kaikoura Wine Company can mount a strong challenge for that title. The winery is situated on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The town of Kaikoura is known for its dolphin and whale-watching excursions. Sit on the deck with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and watch the action. The cellar is dug into the hillside behind the tasting room. Surrounding the area is an arc of majestic mountains.
Kaikoura has been sourcing its grapes from around Marlborough. Recent vineyard plantings at the winery will come into production in a few years. Kaikoura is probably the most "alone" winery in New Zealand. Most of the NZ wineries are located in clusters in the various region. From Kaikoura, however, it is nearly a two hour drive north to the nearest wineries in the Awatere valley.
