Gibbston Valley Wines started about 20 years with a few vines planted to prove they would grow in what was then the remote area of Central Otago. Gibbston Valley has steadily been built up and is the premiere winery in Central Otago. Ownership is now held by investors headed by Mike Stone, formerly an investment banker from California. The winemaker is Grant Taylor, a native of North Otago, who spent about 14 years in Napa Valley with Pine Ridge and Domaine Napa. He has been with Gibbston Valley Wines since 1993 and for the past half dozen years has been garnering a considerable collection of international gold medals, particularly for the Reserve Pinot Noir. In 2001, Gibbston Valley took the honor of Champion Pinot Noir/Burgundy at the 2001 International Wine Challenge in London. Gibbston Valley is also the most popular winery for visitors in Central Otago. Situated a few miles east of the tourist hub in Queenstown, it features a restaurant, wine cave, gift shop and cheesery.
