Morton Estate has been sucessful starting with its first vintage in 1983, particularly for its famous Black Label and White Label Chardonnays. Originating in the Bay of Plenty region and still maintaining a winery there, it now draws its grapes from vineyards in Hawke's Bay and Marlborough. Morton Estate had been one of the most prominent brands during the late '80's and early '90's but is less noticable now with the proliferation of new names and regions. It has had a sucession of quality winemakers including John Hancock, now of Trinity Hill and Steve Bird, now of Thornbury. Morton Estate produces a wide range of wines under a series of labels.
