Hermann Seifried pioneered wine production on the South Island. A native Austrian, he made wine in Europe and South Africa before being brought to New Zealand in 1971 to make fruit wine. The initiative did not pan out and Hermann began planting grapes in the Nelson area; long before the world heard of Marlborough. Seifried Estate is a family enterprise. Hermann's wife Agnes and daughter Anna handle sales and marketing while Hermann and son Christopher handle wine production. Seifried Estate is the larest winery in Nelson and offers an extensive range of wines. Basic wines are marketed under the Old Coach Road label. The middle range is marketed as Seifried, and the upper range is labeled as Seifried Winemaker's Collection.
